This morning my mom and I were near the set of lights at the corner of somerset ave and Weir st. we saw that the freight train was completely stopped and both railroad crossings had the signals down. then we went to Ingell st the gates were down but the train was only a few feet away. I was wondering if something happened? like last years derailment.

  1. I work for a RR and it just kills me how baffled people get when they see a train stopped  " WHY ISNT HE MOVING?????"  I hear  from them....well here are a few reasons.

    1)  The train lost its air pressure and the brakes set ( we call it going into emergency) and the darn thing wont move unitl the air has been restored!!

    2)  Theres a grear BBQ joint down the rail and the Engineer got hungry

    3)  The crew ran out of time to work ( we call it going dead) and cant move the train until a fresh relief crew shows up

    4) A derailment

    5) they had to stop and setout or pickup a car

These are just a few reasons and I dont know why in particular your train didnt move.....but I am sure they had a reason because if it aint moving , we aint making any money!!

  2. no, they just had engine problems and had to check on the locomotive.

  3. any of the above, but give 10 pts to CROW T ROBOT.   MST Ruled!

  4. It could be any number of things, such as they were waiting for congestion further ahead to clear or equipment problems, such as a ruptured or disconnected air hose.

  5. Yeah, can't go wrong with MST3K, great show!  Anyway, back to the question, it could have been any number of things but railroads try to avoid blocking crossings whenever possible so, as Crow said, it was probably just due to congestion or some other unforeseen issue.
