Oh, and I DO understand the big picture, or at least what the big picture is supposed to look like. When the Castellinis took over a couple of years ago, they promised us ( the Reds' fans ) that we'd be on our way to fielding a winner by now. But guess what, things seem to be going in the opposite direction, don't they? Certainly, you can't disagree with that...!

  1. Because the reds are losers

  2. the reds did not give adam dunn away. true, they seemed to have gotten little in return, but you have to understand the whole picture. dunn's contract is up at the end of the season. he'll be a free agent. this is true whether in cincy or in arizona. he'll command some big money, and there is no guarantee that the reds could sign him anyway. in light of that alone, getting anything now, especially considering how this season is going, is a plus. more, the pitcher they got, dallas buck i think, is coming off tommy john surgery. he's supposed to be pretty good, but is just now working back into the routine. while not top-rated, buck could well be worth the trade in the end. the two unnamed players are anyone's guess, and i doubt that will amount to alot, given how these things go. i was hoping dunn would stay in cincy, but given that the reds' real problem has never been dunn but the lack of a consistent lineup around him, it seems to me that this might not be a bad deal at all. and don't forget, the reds can still, if they choose, sign him again this winter. that's probably unlikely, but all in all, this trade just about had to happen, i think, and beyond its own scope, likely also hinged on the fact that 75% of the reds are going to be free agents at year's end anyway....the team will change a lot by next spring...

  3. Because the reds aren't going to make the playoffs. So why pay a guy lots of money when you aren't going to make the playoffs. Its called a firesale. A firesale is when you trade solid players and allstars for younger prospects. Usually teams that have low payrolls do this so they can rebuild. Reds have some fine younger players and so there looking to get better for the future.

  4. You don't know that any of these prospects aren't going to amount to anything. Back in 1987 the Braves traded Doyle Alexander to the Tigers for an unknown prospect named John Smoltz. He turned out pretty good.

Besides Dunn was being paid over 10 million dollars a year which is a lot for a .233 hitter. Now the Reds can use that money to keep somem of their younger players.

  5. They save money, and get rid off poor defense. This allows them to give their developing players more time to mature in the majors as well as giving them a little more depth in their farm system. There was no reason to hang on to Dunn since this season isn't going anywhere for them. It was actually a move they should have made 2 years ago. Sure, people will miss how far/hard he hits the ball,,,but I'm glad to get rid of the hole in LF and the hole in his bat.

  6. How can you say they gave him away when you don't even know who the two players to be named are? I don't care what you say, Dunn wasn't a part of the Reds future. Their future lies in young talent like Cueto, Bruce, Votto, Phillips and Volquez. A guy who bats .230 and hits a tater here and there is not the solution to their losing habits.

  7. 1. Dunn would have walked at the end of the season, they did not want to have to pay a million dollar bonus to two different draft picks that they would have received as compensation.

    2. They could unload the rest of his salary for this season and get three prospects...it is a quantity thing. Also players like Francisco Liriano and Ryne Sandberg have been "players to be named" so some times that will work out for the best for the team that is getting the prospects. Brian Taylor was the greates left handed pitching prospect to ever come out of high school and he never made the big leagues...so waiting for the draft does not do much for you.

  8. I agree. But the same thing should be said for the Manny trade. The Dodgers got him for free.
