Manny chose it. I hate the term "Manny being Manny" (and from what I gather, Manny would rather leave that back in Boston), but the number 99 just screams MANNY BEING MANNY to me.

LA chose the number for him because at about the time manny was traded that same week 20 years ago Wayne Gretzky was traded to LA and because Gretzky brought so much success to the town wearing the number 99 LA in hope of the same type of result gave manny the number 99

it was his choice by the time they were going to give him a different number The Dodgers were already printing out t-shirts so they didn't want to waste them.

Number 24 was already formally retired by the Dodgers' legendary manager Walter Alston, and he also wanted 34, but even that was unofficially "retired" by Fernando Valenzuela.  He turned down offers of 28, 66, and 11 to use 99.  Yeah, 99 does sound like something that Manny being Manny would do.

He wanted 24 (his old number) or 34 (in honor of Ortiz) but he couldn't have either. They then offered him 66 but he instead wanted to flip it for 99. No one quite knows why.

to boston believes , Nick Swisher plays for the whitesox and he had # 30 and offered it to Griffey when he was traded but Griffey went with #17 instead , I wish Manny had 24 but if anyone can pull off 99 its him
