Question:

Why did the Reds trade Adam Dunn?

They didn't get much in return & now they have the HORRIBLE .190 hitting Corey Patterson starting in the outfield. They lost 40 HR 100 R, RBI, & BB & 38 OBP. There goes our offense, all teams have to do now is pitch around Phillips.

The Griffey deal made more sense, but Dunn is in his prime (although his BA leaves a lot to be desired) & all I can see this as is a throw in the towel move by the Reds. We won't see another sell-out for the rest of the year, I can guarantee that. Last place & falling, sadly so.. Your thoughts?

  1. True, and I hate last place.  I doubt if they could have resigned Dunn though I don't think they got much in return for him.  The reds need to think about the future and rebuild.  They need to get rid of pitching coach d**k Pole.  He is terrible!  Dusty isn't much of a manager, either.  Ownership in the past isn't one to committ to big time free agents so getting back on the winning track will have to come from the farm system.  Nineteen games out is really back and I am a long time diehard Reds fan.

  2. idk..

  3. The reason is: future success. The Reds get a good prospect that leaves them hopeful for a better future. Right now the Reds aren't contending for a title, that is why they traded Griffey & Dunn. They are rebuilding in order to try to win in the future. They want to build around players like Edison Volquez. They are also trying to get younger players because they regret losing a player like Josh Hamilton who sparked this year and just took off with amazing talent.

Just wait....they will get into a playoff race within a few years.

  4. Because the sportswriters and announcers of Cincinnati, led by Marty Brennaman and Paul Daughtry, have long undervalued Dunn's contributions, and thus the fans have grown to do so as well.  This led to a culture of Dunn hatred in Cincy--the guy had to go, according to them.  Apparently leading the majors in HR and BB for the last 5-year span wasn't good enough for them.  Jocketty caved to the anti-Dunn segment, and looked to trade him since his contract was up after this season.  I'd love to have him back next season, but I hope he doesn't come back...the city of Cincinnati, and their fans, don't deserve him.  I hope the D-Backs win the World Series, and I'm as diehard a Reds fan as you'll find.

  5. because the reds are going to start a rebuilding process, and that means unloading big contracts to free up salary space for younger players, this is smart considering this year is the final year of his contract, i would hate to lose Dunn too, if he was on my team

  6. yeah, i think the team just wants a clean slate to start over with, they want to go young and build from scratch...this team was already a couple years away, and by getting rid of their best offensive player(even though i think dunn is overrated), they have set themselves back even further

  7. Because Dunn was in no way an answer to their future. Players like Jay Bruce, Joey Votto, Brandon Phillips, Drew Stubbs, Edison Volquez, Johnny Cueto, Homer Bailey, Todd Frazier, Devin Marasco etc....are their future..which is just around the corner. It was a good fiscal move as Dunn's defense, average and Ks weren't worth the money his power demands (which Great American Ballpark helps anyway).  As a Reds fan myself, I'm glad to see this deal get made...I've been crying out for Dunn to be moved for years. I think the ownership has set things in the right direction.

  8. Because him and Griffey were typing up a lot of salary and they are in rebuilding mode...get over it.

  9. I agree with you, there goes their offense and future. Now comes an offensive future, and I'm not talking about scoring runs.

  10. Because they weren't getting the ticket revenue to make a significant profit so they use the old adage "we are rebuilding" which in essence means sit back and watch us develop young talent and when they get good enough to make millions of dollars we will get rid of them.

  11. Yeah it didn't make sense in the sence that they didn't get the QUANTITY they could have got but they got the QUALITY. They got a top tier prospect that was in A because he was rehabbing from Tommy John Surgery you also get a few guys in double A to be named later.
