  1. In fact, the U.S. government has gone to great lengths throughout the history of broadcasting to avoid monopoly ownership. Until recent years, there were strict limits to the number of radio and television stations a single company could own. With the expansion of cable and the Internet in the 1980s and 1990s, some of the ownership rules were relaxed, but they have not done away with completely. You may be thinking of the oligopoly we have in ownership of television program distribution. Just five companies control the cable and broadcast networks. Even here, the government scrutinizes proposed mergers of media corporations to insure at least some diversity.
