Russians said the USA must have trained the Georgian military to run because that's what they did when they observed the Russian military.

  1. because America would do the same if faced by mother Russia.

  2. So, go join the Russian army. I also hear the French are recruiting.

  3. Well I see some people believe the news reports the truth (yea right).

First off they didn't run, it was called re-grouping to protect more important areas.

Now perhaps people will see why Gen MacArthur said we should have continued on and taken Russia too and not just the Germans.  True historical fact, he mistrusted the Russians.

What the Georgians should have done was throw Vodka at the Russians, they would have stopped fighting to drink instead.

  4. its rediculos u to say that

Georgian never started a war, they just defendes some Georgian villages that were fired by Ossetians in August 6-7.

Georgia is not a military country unlike Russia and Georgia has max 4.5 million population and Russians are 10 times more,,

whats the use of being involved in a war against russia, it would be a suicide, thats y Georgians backed off, besides they avoided bloodshed of all sides

  5. ever heard the term history tends to repeat itself, well look at russias track record of being truthful, not great h**l they tried to hide hitlers death for years, and besides its easy to be so cocky when you have such a superiour army, im mean its like someone stepping on an ant, georgia has no way to defend themselves against a fullly equiped russia force

  6. Your funny they were being pounded by rentless Russian air strickes......similar to what we do we pound the enemy with air strickes well the Russians did the same thing and georgia has no airforce so there was nothing to oppose it ecept a few stinger missles witch were very effective the Georgians down over 30 russian planes but it come down to when you being pounded by air strickes what do you do do you stay out in the open and die or do you run and fight another day?...when  there was no russian air support the Georgian army fought bravily they slowed a Russian advance from 2 fronts the Capatial was only 120 miles from the Russians border and georgian troops slowed the russian advance for 4 days aginst all odds the Georgians fought with courage but at the end of the day it goes dow to 2 factors numbers and air power and the Russians had both......

The Russians are poroly trained and poorly disiplined most of them wern`t even in uniform....

  7. Uhmm, and you trust official Russian sources?

For one, Russian military by numbers is around 641,000 plus over 650 aircraft of various type and 40,000 armored vehicles including tanks, APCs and so on. By population, Russia 150mln, Georgia 4.8 mln.

Georgian military is around 22,000, 7 ground attack airplanes, 7 attack helicopters, no fighters and around 200 tanks of which only 80 were relatively new T-72, that is almost 40 years old design. Not that  Russian tanks are much newer, but they have newer T-80s.

According to various independent sources, including Russians initially Georgians did pretty well, which was unexpected to Russians.

First Russian armored column of 30 tanks and apcs was decimated to 5 by the time it reached Tskhinvali. One battalion of infantry was completely destroyed.

General Khrulev, commander of 58th army was wounded and barely escaped capture by Georgian special forces.

Also, even though Russia claimed taking control of Tskhinvali on 8th, it took them 2 more days to actually capture it.

All that time Russia had absolute air superiority, which is critical in modern warfare.

Nevertheless, Russia lost 4 airplanes according to their own sources, and 7-10 according to Georgian. I guess the truth is somewhere in the middle.

Later most of the Georgian forces were completely disorganized, but few brigades did fight well and those were the ones trained by US, and they fought in Iraq. Also, local volunteers fought good. That is according to Russian and Ossetian sources. If they admit it, must be true.

Poorly trained reservists were scattered and disorganized rather quickly facing overwhelming numbers of enemy holding air superiority.

Georgian tanks and artillery also performed poorly, lacking coordination and organization, otherwise Russian losses would've been much higher.

Partly initial success of Georgian army against Russian was  prompted by Russians mistakes.

In the end, I think it was a mistake for Georgia to go into S.O. and the president is at fault.

However, I think pulling back their forces later was justified to save whatever army they could in face of overwhelming enemy. Since it is not war for total destruction as it was in Chechnya.

Russia never cared for the lives of its soldiers too much. Russian losses in Chechen wars according to independent Russian sources were over 15,000.

Small country like Georgia can't afford that anyway unless faced with grave danger. Cities can be rebuilt, but you can't rise the dead.

  8. Russians say a lot of things, few of them true.  The Georgian forces were directed to fall back to protect the capital, because of the very real possibility that this obviously very well-planned invasion of Georgia was intended to depose the current, popularly-elected, pro-American President Saakashvili with someone who would allow Georgia to be pulled back into the Russian empire.  If the outnumbered Georgian forces had been defeated in detail during the invasion, Russians would be raping their way through Tbilisi now. (1)

In 1941, Russian forces ran when they observed the German military, trading space for time, until they could reform their ranks and defend their country effectively.  No different from the Georgian forces now, (2)

  9. The US Military didn't train the Georgian Army to run in the face of a fight.  But it is preferable to make a TACTICAL WITH DRAWL when face superior firepower and no ability to repulse such firepower.

If history has taught us anything it is that any airpower will be highly effective until it causes massive collateral damage.  Once massive collateral damage is done then you can expect that many nations around the world will condemn the action.  Thus, the Georgian Army made a good Tactical, and Strategic decision to withdraw to the cities and set their smaller military in a better position to withstand and possibly repluse the Russian military.

History shows this.  Look at the attack of Hue in Vietnam, the initial assualt into Baghdad during the Iraq War vs. the attempt by the Republican Guard to fight in the open on Highway 1 (aka the Highway of Death) during the Gulf War, and finally look at the stands made by the Germans in the Normandy penisula during Allied invasion of Fortress Europe during WWII.  All decision to make a tactical withdrawl to the cities resulted in forced being in a better position to repulse the opponent while minimizing their own casualties.  The critical factor in the defeat of each of the forces that withdrew to the cities was logistics.  They ran out of bullets, beans, and water forcing them into a full blown retreat.  Therefore the best hope for the Georgian Army is that it has strong supply lines to those forces and that it receives the aid in needs to even out the firepower mismatch.
