  1. Well, it's where the boat landed, and with next to no money to get anywhere else, it was kind of the only option.

    If you mean BEFORE that, remember that "New York" didn't exist.  People landed and moved inland, but not all that far in the early days for fear of indian attack, etc.  Once they began to be more familiar with their surroundings, they spread EVERYWHERE, especially along the coast going south, because the weather conditions were less harsh.  


  2. Good harbour.  The Hudson River was a convenient route to the inland.
