Question:

Why did the flight attendant say my seat cushion could be used for floatation in the event of a water landing?

Why would it be called a water landing if we are not on land? Wouldn't that be a watering? Why would I need a floatation device if we were landing? I'm sure we would all float on top of land without a seat cushion.

  1. On a domestic flight, odds are you'll just be a smokin hole in the ground anyway.

    You should read NTSB reports...

Probable Cause: Failure to maintain clearance from terrain....

  2. well the reason she said that is because if the plane did have ot ditch then if you wanted any chance of surviving you would have to float hence that is why she said use your seat cushion to float. next time listen to what they are saying cus it may well just save your life.

  3. Wrong.

When seaplanes and flying boats set down on water it is also called "landing."  And you already knew that, so why the question?

  4. You can fool all the people all the time.

  5. Cute, but not cute enough.

  6. Because water landing sounds better than crash in the water or plummeting into the sea. Some airlines also say "overwater evacuation." If the F/A didnt say it was a floatation device people would question what to do in a water landing. Airplanes that fly more than 50 miles off the coast carry lifejackets that are yellow and inflate by pulling down on a tab.

  7. Understandably, airlines try to avoid the use of the word "crash" .  Landing (in airline terms) just means to set the aircraft down, be it on solid ground or water.  The term

'ditching' would actually be more appropriate, but as I said,

the airlines like to use 'gentler' , more familiar terms.

  8. Because the words: "water landing" are much less frightening than: "Should this aircraft be turned into a bunch of little pieces scattered about an oil slick in the middle of the ocean..."

  9. the watering would more likely be a crash, so to equate it with landing is absurd....unless of course it is a float or amphibous plane, in which case, they do need a new snigglet.

my kid would use the seat cushions to make a fort.

  10. To the average person an airplane has only a few configurations: Taxi, Taking off, flying, landing, crashing.

Some people dont even understand what it means to 'taxi'.

'Watering' wouldnt add any usefullness as a term. Do you notice that at NO point in the safety demonstration do they say the word 'crash'?
