Why did the names of indian cities change?

especially the changes that are so small like from "calcutta" to "kolkata"

  1. these are indianised version of british names  bombay-mumbai [goddess],chennai-madras after name of person bezwada-to vijayawada after vijay

  3. I agree with vikiyal aka the person above me and that to make them easier to pronounce

  4. Namesof so,me of the cities such as Bombay, Calcutta.etc. were given during british rule.  These names have been changed to local interest by the ruling parties.

    While the name of Calcutta was always pronounced "Kolkata" in the local Bengali language, its official English name was Calcutta, which was to "Kolkata" in 2001 reflecting the Bengali pronunciation.

  5. Itz all because the politicians or the rulers who changes these things are no other works to do in their states. Thatz all.
