  1. Well, I think it won because it had a really extensive library with more than a handful of good games. I believe it sold the most systems also.

Not sure if that is very accurate but those are most of the reasons I've heard and but I can say that the PS2 has probably some of the best games out of the old consoles. That's not to say that the Gamecube and Xbox didn't have it's good games also.

  2. well to make the answer short is because Xbox released 360 and discontinued making xbox games but the sony didn't

  3. The 'console war' between the Sony Playstation 2, Nintendo Gamecube Network, and Microsoft XBOX wasn't as hard-hitting as most think, You can tell when a console is going to win the 'console war' within a year after they're all on the market. Now, one primary reason is the directions each console took:

XBOX focused more on the casual, American gamers. Utilizing a lot of first-person-shooters, sports games, fighting games, and racing games (Such as Project Gotham Racing). The XBOX also used a Hard Disc Drive, which made it the first true HUD gaming console. It also utilized the XBOX LIVE network, which was really the first step into the 'true' online gaming era.

The PS2 focused more on a general audience; It held the entire market for RPGs (with the exception of a few), the majority of action games, and had the support of the industry (The developers who had been developing for Sony for so long, stuck with them, rather than moving to the XBOX) And, while it was a weaker machine, schematically, it maintained a fanbase, though it had inferior online support compared to the XBOX, as well as the lack of an HDD.

The Gamecube Network was the star product of one of the gaming industry's true giants: Nintendo. Nintendo had a fantastic launch line-up for the gamecube. They got the rights to a port of Phantasy Star Online, which, at the time, was the most popular MMORPG ever. It also had signifigantly more RPGs than the XBOX, yet less than the PS2. The Gamecube focused a lot on family entertainment, with very few shooters. Though Resident Evil 4 (when it was exclusive) changed that, by being one of the last great games of the generation.

The primary reason the XBOX failed, was because Microsoft used an off-the-shelf processer, and,the company developing it, ceased production of the processer. This meant Microsoft was no longer able to produce more consoles. Which eventually led to the system slowing to a halt, and actually stopped production several months BEFORE the 360 was released.

The Gamecube lasted a good while longer, the console never really failed, Nintendo just stopped supporting it at the launch of the Wii. They didn't back out of the Gamecube slowly, they abandoned the console entirely upon the Wii's release.

The PS2 has held the test of time well, because many gamers still don't want to fork out the cash for a next-gen console, and the PS2 is the only one from the previous gen still in production or having games developed on it. And, while the support for the Ps2 IS now dying out, some exclusives are still being pioneered on it. Such as Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4, being released in December.
