  1. There has never been a monarchy in history in which the crown passes to a deceased king's wife when he dies.

  2. Queen Elizabeth II's mother Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon became the "Queen Consort" as Queen Elizabeth to King George VI on 11 December 1936 and was titled and styled as Her Majesty The Queen. However, this is only a courtesy title bestowed upon the wife of a King. The crown is only passed onto legitimate royal offspring of a monarch, not the spouse.

King George VI was the rightful heir after his own father, King George V. At the time of the marriage between Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon and Prince Albert (George VI), she was legally a commoner though the daughter of a peer. She was born into a family of Scottish nobility (her father inherited the Earldom of Strathmore and Kinghorne in 1904), however, she has no claim to the British throne, and was never a "Queen" in her own right.

The rightful heir that could succeed after George V was his eldest daughter, Princess Elizabeth of York, now known as Elizabeth II. When Queen Elizabeth II passes away, the crown will go to her eldest son, Prince Charles of Wales, and after him will be his own son, Prince William of Wales.

This is also known as the British line of succession, which is an ordered list of the people in line to succeed to the throne of the United Kingdom. For a complete list of royals who are in line to the throne, visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Line_of_suc...

  3. because the Queen Mother was only Queen by virtue of being the wife of the King.  She was never a hereditary Queen or heir to the throne.  Therefore when her husband died the heir to the throne became Queen.

  4. The QM was a Queen consort, with no direct lineal descent from the King.  So the crown went to his oldest daughter Elizabeth II.
