Ok so i have to write a short essay (paragraph) about why the Romans banned the Olympics after they conquered Greece. I could use a little help with the essay. This is as much as I have so far:

After the romans conquered Greece, they banned the Olympic Games

because they thought it would jeopardize their control over the Greeks.

Roman Emperor Theodosius I banned the Ancient Olympics in part

to establish Christianity as a state religion.

I have to write the topic sentence, I all ready did that. I have to write 3 sentences, I have written 1. Please help me out. I came from homeschooling and never had to write essays to 8th grade public school with a really hard English teacher so please help me!

thanks a whole lot.

  1. well like you stated , the games were banned  to establish control over the greeks and because the games were celebrated in honor of zeus and hera, it was banned because it was deemed a very pagan celebration. you can also add that banning the games did not make it possible for other greek countries to talk to each other, it prevented them from coming together to form alliances. so the banning of the games was a method of divide and conquer. good luck with your paper, you have the two main points.

  2. Huh?  Is this what gets taught as history today?  Rome got control of greece 146 BC, and the games were banned 394 AD - so that seems quite a long AFTER, doesn't it?  A wait of over 500 years?  In fact, several Roman Emperors cherished and fostered the games and Nero even participated.  Theodosius banned them because of the pagan element.  The (East) Romans and the Greeks were scarcely even distinct by then.

  3. They thought it was a cult-like practise.
