  1. Try this..........its interesting stuff.  Apparently terrible storms in the 13th century cut it off.  Romney Marsh was created by pushing the sea back I think.......

  2. The sea began to recede in the 16th century when they built the harbour and it started to silt up.

Wind South West sediment bulld up from rivers. storms and wind preventing it from dispersing drops on sea bed and continues to do so in the more sheltered areas and spreads also sediment swept down onthe banl fro, elesewhere. No dredgig. Roughly the same thing has happened with the River Dee and Chester whilst Lliverpool with the  narrow mouth of the Mersey is helped by the power of the tide (abour 10 knots) sediment dumped at the bar so dredging needed
