Why did the self-deportation program fail? ?

A federal agency vowed Friday to intensify efforts to track down illegal immigrants after ending a trial self-deportation program that attracted only eight volunteers.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said it scrapped the program for illegal immigrants who ignored court orders to leave the country because turnout was low in the five cities where it was offered since Aug. 5.

"We are going to continue our enforcement of immigration law whether it is convenient for people, or whether it's not convenient," Jim Hayes, ICE's acting director of detention and removal operations, told reporters.

Immigrant advocates accused ICE of using the failure of the "Scheduled Departure" program to justify raids that have caused many illegal immigrants to live in fear of a knock on the door during pre-dawn hours. They ridiculed the program, saying it gave people no incentive to surrender.

  1. They are criminals, what do you expect?

  2. Because illegal aliens are very sure that an amnesty is very likely to come , once the new President takes office. I read some of their forums and they are convinced of it, so why would they turn themselves in? All they have to do is wait just a little bit longer, and either McCain or Obama will legalize them

  3. because these invaders are not going to turn themselves in, they have the attitude that they will wait to be caught. Thank goodness for Jim Hayes and his continuing  enforcement. And it should be illegal advocates, they are not immigrants!! I personally hope all illegals live in the fear of getting caught and it makes their lives miserable!!

    Report and Deport!

  4. There are a lot of illegal aliens who tell us they will die before they allow themselves to be deported.

Some of these folks are criminals with wants and warrents in Mexico and those are going to be the last ones the Feds deport... if they deport.

  5. For one thing the target group was criminals. Ones who already ignored deportation orders and other crimes. If they had made it for ALL illegals it might have worked but for some strange reason they didn't. Obviously the criminal element isn't going to take advantage of a great opportunity since they have already shown what kind of thinking they have by past actions. I wish they'd reopen the offer but include ALL illegal immigrants and it would probably work.

  6. this story says 8 people turned themselves in.  I read somewhere else that it was 6.  Several hundreds of thousands of dollars were spent on this program and they got less than 10 illegal immigrants.  Not good value for my tax dollar.

  7. would you leave a country that gave you millions of dollars a year in FREE stuff and let you work without paying in taxes. a country that catered to your every need. you can march and demand rights and you get them you can have 20 kids and not have to pay the bill. I would  leave because I am not a law breaker but they don't care or they would not have broken the law coming here in the first place. they need to take that money and put it into effect guarding the borders hiring more ICE agents to camp out at welfare offices and places.

  8. Because illegals are criminals with a criminal mindset. They care nothing about the law and doing the right thing.

  9. We haven't enforced our laws as well as we should, and the fugitive illegals are pretty confident that we won't come after them, and if we do, ICE won't be able to find them.

ICE has 100 teams that are about to start - this program officially ended yesterday so I bet we'll be hearing about a LOT of raids soon.

  10. That's simply stupid.

  11. Proof once again that these lawbreakers disdain the law and law enforcement.  They think they are above the law and refuse to abide by it.  They need to be arrested, imprisoned on contempt of court and flight to evade prosecution charges, then deported and permanently barred from re-entry.

  12. Because criminals do not act honorably and do the right thing.
