Why did the soldiers dig a fight from trenches in what was known as trench warfare?

  1. They started digging small protective holes or digging out shell holes for protection.  After a while they started to conect the small dug outs to move about safely and for communication and supplies. Eventually the reudimentary trenches were deepened and fortified.  Thus trench warfare became established.
    More of an accident than a design.
