  1. Married women were legally dead in the eyes of the law

Women were not allowed to vote

Women had to submit to laws when they had no voice in their formation

Married women had no property rights

Husbands had legal power over and responsibility for their wives to the extent that they could imprison or beat them with impunity

Divorce and child custody laws favored men, giving no rights to women

Women had to pay property taxes although they had no representation in the levying of these taxes

Most occupations were closed to women and when women did work they were paid only a fraction of what men earned

Women were not allowed to enter professions such as medicine or law

Women had no means to gain an education since no college or university would accept women students

With only a few exceptions, women were not allowed to participate in the affairs of the church

Women were robbed of their self-confidence and self-respect, and were made totally dependent on men

Today, young women proudly calling themselves "the third wave" are confronting these and other thorny issues. While many women may still be hesitant to call themselves "feminist" because of the ever-present backlash, few would give up the legacy of personal freedoms and expanded opportunities women have won over the last 150 years. Whatever choices we make for our own lives, most of us envision a world for our daughters, nieces and granddaughters where all girls and women will have the opportunity to develop their unique skills and talents and pursue their dreams.

I hope that the information above helps but if not please read more at the sight under source.

  2. I dont know, but I wish they all would stop... men use to hold doors, and pull out chairs, and stand when a women entered the room... now your lucky if the man picks up the tab when they take you on a date.... I do work full time, but if i wasnt allowed to I would be fine with that....  b4 those stupid women we just had to cook, clean and watch the kids now we have to cook, clean, watch the kids, go to work, go to school, pay the bills, sometimes even having to mow the grass and "man" work around the house....

  3. For the same reason that slaves found it rather unpleasant to be owned, chained up and forced to work for free.

Women in the 18th and 19th centuries in the West were property to be bought, sold and bartered by their husbands and fathers.

  4. No late night shopping back then?

Bored after finishing the washing and had a lazy afternoon free?

Hard to think of any reason, really, things were soooooo peachy way back when.

    Cheers :-)

  5. women are not the all-evil. men are sinners too. women are not properties, they have voice too. i dunno if men nowadays have to suffer from the deeds of the men before them. but yeah, thanks to our greatest grandpas that things have been this way. (and it isn't like men todays are way too innocent also)

it's all about exaggeration. not much different for now and then, just that it goes on different sides. too left or too right, you do the math.

  6. Probably because women were assumed to be property back then and incapable of doing anything but breed and keep house.

  7. Well, in the 19th century more men were getting the vote and some women were indignant that they were being left out.  Elizabeth Cady Stanton  was particularly indignant when black men got the vote after the Civil War, but white women did not.  She wrote about "Patrick and Sambo and Yung Tung making laws for the daughters of Washington and Jefferson, women of wealth and education."

A similar situation arose in the UK, where the franchise was extended to working-class men in the late 19th century, leaving some upper and middle-class women resentful that men who they regarded as their inferiors could vote while they could not.

Property rights were another source of grievance, married women's property was considered to belong to their husbands, unless there had been a marriage settlement (which there often was in the case of wealthy brides).  The upside of that was that husbands were also considered to be responsible for their wives debts, and indeed for any kind of criminal activity that their wives might get involved in.  A woman was assumed to be under her husband's direction, and therefore not responsible for her own actions.

Divorce laws also disadvantaged women, since women could not sue for divorce, not even for adultery or cruelty.  Also, in the case of a divorce, the father invariably got custody of the children.

Women wanted to change all these things, though not all women supported all of these measures.  The right to vote in particular was opposed by quite large numbers of women, there were women's anti-suffrage leagues in both the USA and the UK.
