Why did they call the moon, moon? Is it named after somebody???

As far I know it's been called the Moon, for at least 6 or 7 thousand years. Since it's refered to in the the Book of Genises which is at least that old.

A long time ago, someone pulled their loin-cloth down and exposed their @ss.  Then someone said, "hey, he mooned me".  And yet another guy said, "yeah, it looks so big and bright...and just like that thing in the sky..."  And so it was decreed...that "thing" in the sky became what we know today as "The Moon"!

It is based on Latin words.  The evolution in language is that a number of people "agree" that certain sounds mean a certain object, verb, adverb, etc.  Once this has been established more complicated words - some drawn on simplier sounds evolve.

In latin languages, the word for moon is similar to the traditional latin word.  It was also decided that monday represented the day of the moon - which is why there is Lundi, Lunes, etc all meaning Monday.

'Moon' is a Germanic word related to 'mensis' - which is literally Latin for measurement of time.

Luna (Earth's Moon) was originally called the Moon -relating to 'mensis', but is now referred to as Luna to avoid confusion with the other planets' natural satellites.

Good question, I have no clue... When I was younger though my grandfather told me (when we saw half a moon) that he ate half of it and it tasted like cheese haha
