Because they wanted to purify the church of England and the religion. In that time, the church had been opened up to everyone, where previously only the elect were allowed to attend service.

The elect were the people who had had experiences in their lives clearly showing them they were going to heaven.

The Puritans wanted to purify the church and go back to the old ways where only the elect were allowed into the church. So the people of England began calling the the Puritans.
