It hides cracks. Also the stupid stuff is sometimes full of asbestos, so it is dangerous to remove.

I have that in my house too-but not for long.  So far we have removed it from the bathroom ceiling...our bedroom is next..easy to take down...messy, but easy for the most part. I dont mind it so much but it holds alot of dust and when I try to vaccum it off, it makes a mess...old house...

Less cost on having a crew sand the seams and prime. Also hides cracks and nail heads. It also attracts alot of dust! Very expensive to have removed. Estimated at $600 - $800 per room.

May be thats an ugly looking one, but there is a Science behind this. You can see those textures mostly in auditorium or any hall or room associated with acoustics.

For example, consider a room with plain surface, may be like inner wall finished with granite stones. In this case, granites (or any plain walls) have tendency to reflect the sound and cause a effect called REVERBERATION.

To avoid this, engineers used to have the walls in the auditoriums as rough surface, which are less likely to reflect the sound waves.

In case, if u have these walls in your house, then it must be a room with the TV and Home theater facilities.

Some designer somewhere decided that it was cool or something and that's all it took!  Design is sometimes a follow the leader thing!  And I personally don't call that design, I call it copy cat!  LOL

It's the lazy way to do ceilings. They just spray it, and if they miss a spot, you'll never know.

Flat ceilings require precision or else it will be noticeable.

No lie, my friend does remodeling for apartments, and that was her answer!
