because its the polite thing to do. in the past, women were considered the "weaker s*x" which is true to a certain extent. women are different than men, that's all there is to it. anyway, what im trying to get across is that women love it when a guy shows that he's thinking about her, even to the point of opening a door. and besides, it's just common courtesy

It's the same as the "lock test".  When a guy lets a girl in on her side and then walks to his door and if she doesn't reach over to unlock his door before he does, she's out.

You don't have to, but any girl who isn't a rabid manhating feminist likes it. Doing stuff like that (i.e., carrying things, opening doors, that sort of thing) reminds her that she's a woman and makes her feel special. Happy?
