Why did women wear corsets?

Was it because of an aesthetic ideal that they were trying to match or was it just the fashion? Thanks for the help everyone.

  1. to shape there bodies into what was fashionable at the time.  Luckily we know better than to do that to ourselves today, although body image is probably more of a problem in todays society than it was then.


  2. i like when my gf wears a correst to bed it makes s*x more exciting and fun she also wears them to the renasance festaval

  4. A corset is a garment worn to mold and shape the torso into a desired shape for aesthetic or medical purposes.  or women this most frequently emphasizes a curvy figure, by reducing the waist, and thereby exaggerating the bust and hips, and make them feel sexier and attractive..

  6. i think it was to make their waists smaller.... look at the dresses they were wearing....tiny waist and then poofs out at the hips.

  7. At the time, waistlines of a certain diameter were fashionable, and so, women laced, and had themselves laced, into these 'straitjackets' to prove that they were desirable.. While those are very rarely as constraining, they ARE still used, but, not to the same severity.
