I have been a vegetarian for about a year now, and I just wanted to know if any of you could tell me why you became vegetarians, how it has impacted your life, and any great recipes or resources (books or online) that you can offer. Thanks!

  1. i became a vegetarian for religious and ethical reasons.  it is one of the best decisions i've ever made! now i can be guilt free, i've lost weight, my skin looks better, and i feel like i have more energy.  now when i have cravings it's usually for the good stuff instead of junk.  i'm happy with my choice =).

some great resources i would recommend are:

    www.theveggietable.com

"The Vegetarian 5 Ingredient Gourmet" cookbook

    "The New Vegetarian Grill" cookbook

oh, and this forum!!  most of the users here are very informative and helpful and can be a great resource.

    Good luck =)

  2. did it for a while.. i liked the food at cdkitchen.com ... pretty tasty stuff.

  3. A great restaurant guide is http://www.happycow.net/

It can sometimes be difficult to be vegetarian when traveling, especially if you're at the beach and everything is fish. Taco Bell has good bean tacos, Burger King has veggie burgers and McDonalds has the fruit, yogurt granola thing. And, there's always pizza.

In general, Indian, Thai (careful of fish oil), Ethiopian, Greek, Italian, Middle Eastern and Mexican cuisine are very good for vegetarian options. These all involve tofu or bean-based dishes. Japanese and Chinese food has some options too. There can be excellent vegetable dishes in French and German cooking, but it's not as easy.

Indian is very tasty and easy to cook at home - please try it! It can be as easy as crackling some cumin seeds, frying some peppers and ginger, then mixing in kidney beans and tomato!

Day to day, veggie burgers, rice & beans, hummus, pastas, and eggs make a good quick meal.

Try to find some vege friends - we're often eager to cook together with fellow herbivores :)

Good luck and congratulations on your decision to be vegetarian!

  4. I have always been one.You can get some very good recipes at

    http://www.vegetariantimes.com/

    http://veginspirations.blogspot.com/

    http://www.recipezaar.com/recipes.php?s_...

You can also search vegetarian recipes on the internet through a search engine depending on which cuisine you want to make or try

All the best in your search !!

  5. I am not a vegetarian but many of my family including my brother. They became vegetarians because of our religion. I do the cooking so I know how difficult it can be to find things to cook. There are many sites online you can visit to get vegetarian meals.

    vegweb.com , vegkitchen.com , www.veggie123.com , www.vegetariansrecipes.com

There are too many to list but you can go to google or yahoo and search vegetarian recipes and you'll get tons of sites. You'll be able to find food according to your taste also, whether it's indian, chinese, spanish etc.

I agree with Alan 100% that vegetarians shouldn't eat chicken or fish and according to my religion eggs are out also because long ago eggs were supposed to change into a living creature(chicken)  and you were getting rid of that life, but now they rear chickens only to lay eggs so it's probably a something that should be thought about.

Good luck and happy eatings. :)

  6. For recipes go to www.bbc.co.uk/food

I'm not vegetarian, never eaten a vegetarian meal, but my wife is and i do all the cooking, she grew up on a farm and the animals were her friends then suddenly taken away to be killed and eaten, guess that could be quite traumatice when you are young, i love a nice bit of steak or chicken and we have zero problems eating / cooking together. We each have seperate store cupboards, and cooking equipment, yet we have similar meals most nights. BTW if anyone eats fish or chicken and says they are vegetarian, they are full of it, to be vegetarian you don't eat anything with a face :)
