  2. Because sailors used to refer to the boat as a she so they did not revert to homosexuality, and it kinda stuck

  4. This is a custom used mainly in English dominated countries. In France, for example the ships were male gender. When construction of the Normandie was completed to the point of naming the ship, many didn't want to name it "Normandie" because in French, Normandie is feminine. The bottom line is it just depends on the country and the language.
