Why did you join the military?

I'm just looking for some perspective/insight on why others joined the military. Feel free to share all you want!

  2. Where else can you enjoy a GREAT CAREER working with people that will become LIFELONG friends (shipmates!), A career that includes travelling the world...  still pays a REAL pension... and then after only 20 years!!!!   Pays for medical, school, housing, even subsistance....

    Okay... I guess that says it all... and if you think I'm anything less than sincere... realize that I could have retired at 20 years....   check my source....

  3. I loved warships since I was a kid and wanted to sail on them. I was extra motivated by the Persian gulf tanker war in which the USS STARK was hit by two Iraqi missiles. I then joined was sent to the gulf on board the USS LaSalle AGF-3 command ship 5th fleet and kicked Iranian butt later as they were attacking tankers and littering the gulf with drifting mines that damaged several of our warships nearly sinking the USS SAMUEL B. DAVIS.  

  4. is to serve the country I thought was right that was 1965 when I went in and then of course when I came back four years later ,  out of the service I was looked down upon by Americans had never serve to protect the country .writer wrong I served the country and of course the draft dodgers went to Canada and stayed there until Carter Letterman back into this country.the cowards I bet they are living good off this country now .wait to the lose this country and lose your freedoms we are losing little freedoms now

  7. I joined during the Cold War.  It was a family tradition to hate the Russians.  (I still don't care for them).  It was my way of "Do for my country."  It certainly wasn't the money that I was after.

    I got to see some really odd countries, meet some interesting people.  Uncle Sam took care of me.  I can't complain.

    At least this is how we sold the Army :)

  9. My grandfather served in WW1. My father served in WW2. I served during Vietnam, and my son was a marine. I am proud of my family's service, and wish there was more I could do to serve my country.  

  10. I joined because my draft number was 113. I joined the Army National Guard. During the 70's draftees normally were sent straight to Vietnam.

    Many were killed. I made a wise choice along with many other college graduates!

    War is h**l! Join and your chances of being sent straight to Iraq or Afganistan is a sure thing!

  14. I wanted to rape, pillage and plunder like the folks featured on CNN did. Sadly I experienced none of that.
