Question:

Why didn't I receive a stimulus check?

I am a college student that is 20 years old. I am a dependent by the standards of the IRS because my parents pay for my college and I don't meet the criteria on FASFA/FAFSA (whatever) to be independent. I didn't receive a stimulus check and neither did my parents. One of us should have shouldn't we? Money is coming out of their pockets to pay for my college. Does anyone know anything about this and if and why I fell in the buttcrack of the IRS standards?

  1. Dependents are not eligible for the stimulus rebates.  Sorry.

You are too old for your parents to receive the $300 kicker for a child.  That's limited to children under age 17 as of Dec 31, 2007.

It's not  the IRS but Congress who wrote the rules, so don't blame the IRS.

  2. It depends on how your parents claim you on their taxes not what the FASFA says. Dependents must be 16 or younger for stimulus so no one gets it for you.

  3. Had you read the IRS website criteria on who would qualify for the stimulus you would of known that you would not qualify, because of your age and being a dependent, had you not been a dependent and filed your own return then you would have qualified.

Be thankful you have parents that can and will send you to college.

  5. You aren't eligible because you are a dependent, and dependents aren't eligible.

Parents only get extra for kids under age 17.

No, not everyone gets one - in your case, nobody does for you.

They aren't IRS standards.  That's how Congress wrote the law.

  6. #1.  You have to have filed an income tax return for 2007.

#2.  There are some income limits that apply.

#3.  They are sent out according to the last 2 digits of your social security number.
