  1. Federer wanted to have a proper rest for the Masters...he does not want to burn himself out (ie Nadal) and want to save his energy for later.

  2. he took a rest... winning estoril, reached finals in monte carlo... so, he's not playing in barcelona...

nadal didn't play any tour before monte carlo... so he played in barcelona, as well as to defend his points....

rafa and roger are both playing in rome...

  3. Federer IS playing in Rome.

He plays in the higher tier events - Monte Carlo, Rome and Hamburg. This year he added Estoril. Playing in Barcelona would have been too much in too short a time.

  4. because he's scared

  5. What does participating in Barcelona have to with playing in Rome?  You do know those are two different events (and cities, and countries) don't you?  He just played Monte Carlo the week before Barcelona, and reached the final, so he obviously wanted to rest up before Rome, which like all the Masters Series events is mandatory for those who qualify.  Only the true die-hard clay courters, and a select few of them at that (like Nadal), play every week of the clay court season.

  6. Federer is playing in Rome, check the draw before posting. He didn't play Barcelona to rest.

  7. Playing on clay in what Nadal considers his home tournament? Now that would just be asking for a beating.
