Question:

Why didn't my computer load at first? For tech savvy people

Okay, I have a Dell Vostro 1500 laptop. I logged into my account and nothing loaded, though I could see the wallpaper in the background. I waited but nothing else loaded, not a single icon.

After a reboot it was all better.

Can I prevent this in the future somehow? I don't want an answer saying "So just reboot it everytime it's blank" please. I know I can reboot it but I want to figure out how it came about in the first place. Thanks to any helpful answers

  1. do a defragmentation of your hard disks. open my computer, select the drives --> properties --> tools --> defragment now.

Then google for tweakui from microsoft, install that, and run a repair on all the functions.

one suspect is: your hard disk is too fragmented the other is, some of the system files are corrupt.

  2. General rule of thumb with computers:

If it happens once, it's a glitch.

If it happens more than once, it's a problem and should have some energy invested in fixing it.

If you really want to find out what hung on loading, right click

My Computer(Computer if you're using Vista) and select Manage.

Look in the event viewer for items marked as warnings or errors that happened during the time frame you had the problem in.

  3. First of all, were you able to move the mouse? Try and remember. If you were able to move it, then the problem must have been simple. And it must have been a glitch, as mentioned by another answerer.

There is an application called explorer.exe in your Windows system folder which when started, brings up the desktop icons and the start bar and everything. This file, 'explorer.exe', must always start at startup automatically.

That time, when the icons and everything didn't show up, it might have been that the file explorer.exe didn't start automatically due to some technical glitch or problem. That is why you were not able to see any icons and stuff.

So, the next time it happens, try doing this:

    >> Press Ctrl+Alt+Del.

    >> Click on File in the menu bar.

    >> Click on New Task.

    >> Then type 'explorer.exe' in the space given to you and hit enter.

The desktop should show up. If it doesn't and instead a window turns up, do this again a few times, till you can see the desktop icons and the start bar.

This will only work if the mouse is working and you are able to move the cursor, not if the problem is something different.

Hope this helped. I'd recommend keeping in mind all the answers given here, as they'd help if one does not do the trick.
