  1. Elizabeth has been called the "Virgin Queen", because she never married. It is not clear why Elizabeth never married. Historians thought it was because of a few things. One is that she was hurt by her mother’s death, and the sense of mistrust against men in general when she saw her father remarrying over and over again.

There were also rumours that she would only marry one man, Robert Dudley, the 1st Earl of Leicester, with whom she was deeply in love. But she was opposed by surrounding people. So Elizabeth decided that if she could not have him, she would not marry at all. The most likely reason may be that she didn’t want to cause problems by marriage. For example, politics would become uneasy and England would be opposed by other countries. So she refused even the marriage to Felipe II of Spain. But she had many male courtiers who wrote her love poetry and entertained her throughout  out her long reign.

  2. Liz the l***o.

  3. she wanted to prove to the world that a woman was just as brainy and powerful as a man.  or because she didnt want too the real answers are unknown.

  4. she felt that if she got married her husband would try to take a lot of her power and distract her from being the queen.

  5. men take away power

  6. I believe she was barren or probably such a b l t c h that no men were interested in her...

  7. he could leave her and take all of her money and power ! Then she would be left with nothing!

  8. She seems to have had a rather ambivalent attitude towards marriage.  Sometimes she seemed to like the idea, sometimes not.  As a Queen, it was difficult for her to find the right person to marry.  There were all sorts of problems that could arise from her marriage.

For instance, in those days women were expected (in theory at least if not always in practice) to be submissive to their husbands, and as she said "I will have in this kingdom but one mistress and no master"  She liked ruling the roost and didn't want to share her power with anyone.

And then she was very keen on robert Dudley for a long time, but she couldn't marry him at first because he was married, then later because of the scandal over his wife's death.

And years later she got quite keen on the duke of Anjou who wanted to marry her, but because he was French and a Catholic he was a wildly unpopular choice with the public, and she was talked out of it by her council.

In the end she decided she was married to her kingdom, and that was that.

  9. If you saw your father murder two of his wives, would you want to be married? There is a rumor (or whatever you call it) that she saw Catherine Howard screaming hysterically and running from the guards who were trying to take her to the Tower, after her arrest. Apparently, that's when she told her friend Robin Dudley that she would never marry.
