Why didn't the 'Royal blackmailers' just go to Fleet St?

I've read that blackmail has almost disappeared as a crime in the UK since the tabloids buy any old gossip.

I read they had been trying to get someone to buy it for the last six months but all the newspapers thought it was a beat up and would not touch it

Probably trying to maximize profit. If you blackmail the victim, you have a chance of getting money from them, and then you still have the opportunity to sell to the tabloids. But if you sell to the tabloids first, there's no further money to be made.
