He went to Lafayette Senior High School in Lexington, KY and won several state titles, according to Wikipedia. He grew up in Lexington, and still returns there often to visit family. Why did UK (among other schools, apparently) pass on such an obvious world-class talent? He ended up starting out at Barton Community College before going to the University of Arkansas, where he won the NCAA Championship in the 100 meters. Now, he's the owner of the fastest 100 meters in history, a wind-aided 9.68 seconds.

  1. It might have something to do with his grades and ACT/SAT test scores.  The NCAA has strict guidelines concerning who can and can't play at Division I and II schools.  This is just a guess, though.

  2. There may be the possibility of grades and test scores, choice of coaches or majors.  Yet quite often, young men like to go away from their home towns to go to college.  Community colleges are a great way to get your academic act together and make up your mind on majors while gaining credits at a reasonable cost.
