Why didn't the people on Titanic climb onto the iceberg to wait for survivors that way?

  1. I f the TITANIC had reversed engines, and backed up to the iceberg, there would've been a self-bailing effect, sucking water out of the bow.  Then they should have circled 'round the iceberg, while ferrying people to the ice island with gerry-rigged ladders and carpeting and food and survival stuff like bottles of brandy.
