  1. In my honest opnion i think Patterson was scared of Frazier!! They had a chance to meet in the late 60's but from what some boxing historians say Floyd ducked out before even signing the contract due to personal issues. To me that meant he was scared. Both were heavy, hard punchers but Frazier would've taken him out early

  2. 1960s was an era of the loquacious  muhammad ali. everything he says or quotes then got press attention and he was a sensation so matchmakers perhaps figured that a boxing match with ali in it would only make money.

  3. first, patterson fought quarry in an eliminater for ellis' wba title.

they fought to a draw, then jerry won a disputed decision in the rematch, so quarry fought ellis, jimmy won   a majority decision.

patterson then got a shot at ellis himself because of the closeness of  his fights with quarry, and lost on points over 15.

ellis then fought frazier in a unification and smokin' joe flattened him in 5....(this fight is where the nysac became the wbc among the heavyweight alphabet soup).

if joe & floyd had fought....joe would have dominated the fight and stopped floyd around the 5 or 6 round mark.

  4. Frazier would of killed Patterson within the first couple rounds. He was way too aggressive for a slow guy like Floyd.

  5. A prime Patterson would have been in trouble against a swarming puncher like Frazier so it is scary to imagine what would have happened with a late 60s version who was past his prime.

With the WBA tournament for the title, once Patterson lost, there really was no reason for Frazier to fight him.  He was winning hte NY State version of the title against Buster Mathis and then universal recognition beating Jimmy Ellis, the tournament winner.

A prime Frazier would have mowed Patterson down, maybe not in a round like the brutal Sonny Liston, but within 3-4 rounds.

  6. That was a blessing for Patterson because Joe would have knocked him out.
