Question:

Why different styles for swimming.?

To me the other styles of swimming don't make sense. If you can go faster swimming using the crawl technique or what they use in the freestyle event why do other styles like the backstroke and butterfly.

To me it's weird. If this were to apply to other sports like running they would have 100 meter backwards sprint (although i think that would be an interesting event).

  1. For the same reason there are classes of cars in different automotive racing bodies.

That would be like asking "Why do people race go carts or dirt bikes in circuit races when they can just race formulas and sport bikes in an oval on pavement because formulas and sport bikes can go faster?" OR (to less extent) "Why do we have weight classes in combat sports?"

Because that would be boring and you need variety in every sport. Different challenges, you know?

  2. buddy, this is a strange question, lol but ciriousity is good :)

Just freestlye is BORING. Backstroke, Breaststroke, and butterfly are almost just as important as free style. Idk who made the stroke up, but its like a WAY of doing sumthing. Up down left right. North south east west. High low side side. you are in the water, there are many ways to go fast, thats why there are different strokes. On ground, running is the only fast way to go fast...

I tried to reason the best i could :) hope that answers ur question ;)

(yes, 100 meter backwards sprint would be interesting.)

  3. there are different techniques of swimming because it's good to challenge yourself in different ways.
