  1. hahaha.

  2. haha

    racist

    but true

  3. If other people were smart, they'd open up businesses like 7-11's too.

You invest a bit of money for the franchise and the store costs, and now you have a business that makes fast money (there is a huge demand for cigarettes, slurpees and coke), doesn't have much overhead, and provides a person who just came from India to thrive and live the American dream.

And like the previous poster mentioned, the people that own 7-11's have their family as employees, which cut out payroll expenses.  They share in the profits and are some of the most successful people in the country.

Next time you want to make a lot of money in a limited amount of time, think about opening up a business like 7-11.

  4. This is a very interesting question. I believe the answer lies in 2 factors which define an Indian society. Entrepreneurship and Joint+close families.

Generally people in India tends to start a trading business whenever they move out. (Either with-in India or Outside) So you have Marwaris and sindhi communities who had a critical role in developing nationwide supply chain with in India much before infrastructure and communication were developed. (To introduce a new brand of toothpaste in India 20 years ago, all you needed to do is to connect to a 'right' guy and in few weeks, you will have your product in every remote corner of the country with virtually no risk of non-payments)

Similarly, when People go to US/UK, opening a shop is the 1st preference, specially for FMCG items which sells fast (Less inventory, less initial capital, faster cash flow). Secondly, Since the family is important, they help each other in giving the job in those places, training and then setting up  their own shops.

The tricks of the trade, Knowledge, contacts all are freely shared with-in the network. And before you know, the network expands. Since things work on trust, you can also get interest free loan with-in your contacts.

And we must not forget,  opening a small shop is not a preferable options for locals. So NO competition! :)
