Why do American basketball players change their numbers when they play in the Olympics?

  3. I think that's their chance to suit up other numbers they like. Like the one they wear in highschool or college. Other never got the chance to wear their preferred number in the NBA because the number is already retired.

  6. When your playing in FIBA tournaments, (or olympics) you have to use the number 4-15. Every American player on the olympic squad used a different number than they use in the NBa this year other than Carmleo Anthony, who kept 15. I was already beat to this though.

  7. FIBA, which handles international basketball and runs the Olympic tournament, has rules for jersey numbers. I think the highest number is 15.
