Watching the US coverage of the olympics I have been reminded of a strange language quirk that I hadn't thought about for a while.Has anyone else noticed how Americans prounounce "defence" (or "defense" as they spell it) differently when talking about sporting defence, or an act of defending in sport? In these cases they say DEEfenceEverything else like the US Dept of Defense is pronounced the more normal way - "D'Fence".Does anyone know how and why this came about?
