Why do Americans pronounce "defence" diff for sport?

Watching the US coverage of the olympics I have been reminded of a strange language quirk that I hadn't thought about for a while.

Has anyone else noticed how Americans prounounce "defence" (or "defense" as they spell it) differently when talking about sporting defence, or an act of defending in sport? In these cases they say DEEfence

Everything else like the US Dept of Defense is pronounced the more normal way - "D'Fence".

Does anyone know how and why this came about?

  1. like JaneB said, i also think it's to clearly differentiate between DEE-fence and OFF-fence. it's for emphasis.

however, I *DO* like it .... of course, i'm American!

besides when your chanting at a sporting event, it's easier to chant 2 syllables. shouting "D'FENCE" would just sound pretentious.

  2. I'd never thought about it but you're right.

    Then again, they are American.

Maybe it's to put more emphasis on the word when commentating.

  3. I am american and now that you mention it i see what you mean i guess in sports saying it "DEEfense" sounds more exciting and when talking about the U.S. Dept of defense i guess they try to be more professional by saying it the other way.

  4. There is a subtle difference in meaning between the two.

Defense is the generic noun, whereas DEEfense indicates the specific defensive mode or capability of an entity, such as a team or an individual. Example: The Giants play well on defense. They have a great DEEfense.

  5. I think it's to clearly differentiate between DEE fence and OFF fence.  It's an emphasis.  I don't like it though .... of course, I'm a Brit!

  6. I first noticed that while playing Halo 2, the commentator would shout with sheer enthusiasm 'DEEfense'. I really thought it was just a way of pronouncing the word.
