Why do Americans think of KFC etc as cheap food?

Well, as opposed to going to the grocery and buying all the ingredients it would take to cook at home fried chicken, potatoes, gravy, cole slaw, and corn on the cob, KFC is VERY inexpensive.  Whether it actually qualifies as "food" or not is probably debatable.

Its good. I don't know about cheap though!! We are there the other night and spent 20 bucks for the 2 of us. I mean for fast food, I think thats a little much.

i never realy heard anyone say it was cheap, its fast and conveinient - when u only have $3 you can get 3 dollar menu items but, other than that - i think people think its a bit expensive

Compared to a sit down meal, fast food is cheap.  However, it's much cheaper in the short term, healthier, and cheaper in the long run to just bring a healthy lunch to work and to avoid fast food at all costs.  Speedy, greasy pizza joints are fast food too!

I don't think it's "cheap" food, it's very expensive, it's just quick food, and some of it tastes good.

because its not made by a chef its made by some ungraduate that wants to work @ a fast food place 4 the rest of their life

We dont really think of it as cheap, its just easy to get when your on the go, or dont feel like cooking.

As an American myself i can tell you that KFC is considered cheap because it is, here in the Uk KFC is unbeleivable expensive as is McDonalds, Pizza Hut etc.  You can get a bucket of chicken for 10usd, that is 5 pounds! plus all the sides are included. McDonalds constantly have 2 big macs for $2.00, buy one meal get one free. Here in the UK KFC and the likes of them are almost gourmet!

I don't know, because I do not think of any fast food as inexpensive.  However, I do think of it as lacking in nutrition.  Perhaps that is why it is called cheap, because it is not made from anything that is good or good for you.

One can buy a nutritious meal at a moderately priced restaurant for very little more.

it really isnt.  eating out is more expensive than making a meal and having leftovers.
