  1. Some countries do some don't

    England for one

  2. In most of Asia, the cars are left hand drive and people drive on the left. In England, Ireland, Scotland, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan, the cars are right hand drive. There may be a few other places (maybe Hong Kong, but I'm not sure now that it is no longer under British rule). It dates back to the time of the horse and carriage, the driver always sat on the right (even in America). British cars started being built that way and stayed the same. Early American cars were a center drive system, and gradually became a left hand drive.

  3. im not asain or in asia and i drive on the right side of the car

  4. History! In the late 19th Century, the pioneers of motoring were German, French and British. The rules of the road were pretty vague back then because most traffic was horse drawn. If you look at very early movies you can see that the streets of cities were pretty chaotic.

With the arrival of the motor car it became necessary to improve the rules of the road. The Brits opted to drive on the left (they built all their own cars then too). The Germans and French chose the right, possibly because the Brits chose the left (there was a lot of such rivalry back then).

The Brits were the biggest World power at the beginning of the 20th Century and had a huge empire - so they exported their right hand drive cars to the many countries of the British Commonwealth - that's why so many East Asian and African countries drive on the left. Its also why Australia and New Zealand also drive on the left.

Japan started its car industry by assembling British cars - so they too ended up driving on the same side of the road as the Brits - and still do!

Interestingly, the Swedes switched sides back in the 60's - they knew they had to do it then, at the beginning of the era of multi-lane carriageways and heavier reliance on the car. To change later would have been impossible. For this reason it is now unlikely that any other country will ever change sides.
