Why do British people never sound British when they sing?

AFAIK most of the current britpop and indie artists use their own native accents. However, I've heard that many Brits sing in American accent to provide themselves with better commercial success - STUUUUPID!! American accents SUCK! (mostly, sometimes not).

Just imagine something like Iron Maiden's Where Eagles Dare sung with some kind of Texan accent - it would destroy the effect of the vowels in chorus!!

I listen mainly to old school British heavy metal and most of these people keep their accent to this day.

I think thats a bit of a big thing to say. None of the british artists i listen too sound american.. ie:

the hoosiers

the ting tings

amy winehouse

sarah bareilles

chris martin (of coldplay)

the list goes on dude.

Some of them do, but most dont. In my eyes, anyway, lol.

that's not always true. Liam Gallagher of Oasis sounds like a total brit! he's great!

Because the songs were written by Americans, so therefore they have no British accent, old chap!

Billy Bragg is one of the most English sounding artists out there.  As a side, there is a long "tradition" of Americans trying to sound English (read: punk).
