Why do Escape Slides deploy sometimes inside the aircraft?

I know that the 737, MD 80 have girtbars, but the others where there is an Automatic mode and they inflate by like a hard landing...Doesnt the door actually have to be cracked and the lanyard pulled to activate the gas cylinder. Cause I know on youtube i saw a video of a md-11 and the door went in turned like 1 degree then out and was pulled out of the door when going to the full open position and activated by the manual cord. I know there plug type doors and some open inside and up and airbus and 777 go up a lil then out and to the side....But the packcase that holds the slide would have to still pull the activation clip to automatically inflate when the door is being opened..So how does it happen then when the door is sealed n shut

  1. Escape slides do not deploy automatically on a hard landing. It would not make sense. The plane would still be in motion and the slides would be destroyed. There is a specific sequence that the slide is deployed by. They are rigged at the factory and any time a slide is deployed they are re-checked for proper operation

  2. Accidental deployment by someone inside the aircraft or outside, but this is a very rare occurrence for the slide to deploy with the door shut(not having been attempted to open).I've seen some 767 slides deploy on maintenance checks because of faulty electrical signals.

  3. Escape slide don't deploy inside the aircraft.  Where did you see this?

Maybe this will answer your Q.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EC-FHUfb9...

In auto mode, the girt bar stays attached to the door sill when the door is opened.  So all you have to do is move the handle to the open position and the door will open itself and automatically deploy the slide.  If it fails to inflate automatically you can do it manually by pulling the cord.

"So how does it happen then when the door is sealed n shut?"

It doesn't.  The door has to be in auto, then the door has to be opened by someone inside.  The doors don't automatically open by themselvs.

  4. They could deploy in the plane if there is a malfunction and a shock set it off.  I've seen other things (like o2 masks falls down) during hard landings.

Also, for slides with girt bars, all you have to do is pull the bar out to deploy the slide.  It doesn't necessarily have to be in the girt fittings and the door open.
