Why do Europeans put x (or xx) at the end of a letter?

I know a guy from Brittan and a girl from Finland who put x at the end of a letter or text message. What does this mean?

its a way of us Europeans giving u a kiss lol

"x" stands for or means a kiss. Its very normal between friends, even if you wouldn't kiss them in real life!!!
