Why do Filipino bless (Mano) to the older people?

In other words, why do we "Mano" to our parents, grandpaents, "tito," "tita," etc.??

Where did we learn this (origin)?

  1. Every civilized nation in the world honors and respects the elderly.

    In America we introduce the young to the older as a form of respect

    In Korea they hand things to the elderly with their left hand touching the wrist with their right hand and bow the head slightly....a show of respect

    In Puerto Rico the young person never looks the elderly in the eyes but keeps their gaze low as a sign of respect.

    Mano is just the Philippine version of this time honored tradition of respecting your elders and their service.


  2. It is a sign of respect and it is one attitude that a Filipino can never remove to him/herself since they were trained to that ever since they were young. And it is also a part of the Filipino Culture. =]
