  1. They are not that rare nowadays. But I think the reason that some breeders would give is the fact that many  of them have to have Cesareans and that would bump the cost up. We have two and I personally think they are way over priced

  2. A French Bulldog was aboard the Titanic and insured for the then astonishing sum of almost $800.00... Frenchies have ALWAYS been expensive... It was a very small breed club up until the early 1990s, and due to their rarity and difficulty in impregnating (by means of progesterone testing and A/I) and birthing (usually by C-sections) plus all the pre-natal health-screening, X-rays, genetic testing and costs of exhibiting (cool coats, fans, etc.), the females also require round-the-clock care when nursing their puppies so it's very labor intensive unlike other breeds of dogs... Hobby breeders don't usually make any profit from the sale of puppies, barely enough to cover their costs, if they're lucky enough to produce a show-worthy example that they can keep to perpetuate good lines...

While pugs have certain similar traits (brachycephalic, etc.), they're less difficult to impregnate and pugs prove to be excellent at nursing their litters... Hence, they're less labor intensive...

Unless you really know what a breeder goes through in the raising and caring of dogs (and assisting the puppies every 2 to 3 hours all through the night), you'll see that $250.00 / week doesn't even begin to cover the "cost of caring" for the tiny puppies until they're 12 weeks of age...

It really is a "labor of love." And that's why they cost more than lots of other dog breeds...

  3. HI...it is because female french bulldogs have to be monitored and recieve sonagrams all throughtout their pregnacy, and have to have the pups by cesarean because the pups heads are bigger than the mom's birth canal. And this is very expensive.  It is hard for them to carry the puppies full term. And if they do the litters are very small, like 4 or less pups.

And all this is because of the breeding throughout the years to get the french bulldog to look as he does today.

  4. because it's "French" and France is a country. they always do that to make it more expensive. for example: if something has Disney on it you'll pay extra money for the name. pretty annoying really. he he ^_^

  5. They are from France but price has nothing to do with France.Yes they are rare, also they have a great personality, and is renowned for its ability to entertain its family for hours on end.
