Question:

Why do Germans stare at different looking people?

I have traveled a great deal and have noticed that Germans stare at people who are different more than any other country that I've ever been to. I'm also from a European country, and this behavior would be considered extremely rude and offensive where I'm from. I understand that it may be cultural, and I'm willing to accept that if it is, but I'm curious as to whether or not Germans realize that they're doing it. I have friends who are Black and Asian, and whenever we go out they get stared at like they're animals in a zoo. I'm not talking about looking someone in the eyes when talking, everyone does that, but this is clearly staring. I can understand curiousity, but to stare very long makes people uncomfortable. Any intelligent and insightful thoughts would be appreciated.

  1. Why are the Germans on this site so quick to refute the truth? This DOES happen. I never have stains, or unzipped zipper and I get stared at all day and every day walking down the street. No, I don't look German, and YES people do stare. I bet you guys do it too, you just aren't aware of it. I attribute it to being that I don't look German, and perhaps people are trying to figure out where I come from. Either way it's rude and uncomfortable. I feel like I'm on a TV show and just didn't know it. What I've begun to do is take all in stride and ask people what they're looking at or "May I help you?" or "Why don't you take a picture, it'll last longer?"

  2. Actually, it happens quite a lot, especially on public transport. There is a discussion here about it: http://www.toytowngermany.com/forum/inde... (link to ex-pat forum). I haven't managed to figure it out - but it does feel uncomfortable. I stare back these days. With attitude.
