Question:

Why do I gag when I try to eat certain vegetables?

I can drink any vegetable juice you hand me, but for some reason I gag whenever I eat the solid form of most veggies. I can eat carrots, potatoes, and green beans with no trouble at all. But give me celery, lettuce, or peas. And after maybe 6 bites, I'll gag once and then have a "throwing up" feeling until I get the vegetable I gag from out of my mouth and drink some water/juice. I don't think it has anything to do with my digestion since I eat whole grains and fruits easily (the only fruit I have a problem with is cantaloupes). If anyone could please help me, it would be much appreciated.

  1. If you dont have trouble drinking vegetable/fruit juices, Then I suggest putting all those Vegetables in a Juicer and see how that goes

  2. Cut them into pieces and chew before you swallow

  3. cause you don't like the taste?

  4. Texture, maybe? I love the taste of mushrooms but I can't eat them. They feel way too weird and rubbery haha.

  5. BECAUSE YOUR OVERLY NOT VEGETARIAN THAT WHY YOU GAG OR ANOREXIA

  6. I agree with pink sky.  I think you must associate those vegetables with something unpleasant and that makes you gag.  Because if you can drink V8 juice I  think it  has all of those in it.  Sometimes it helps to use a different form of that vegetable.  Like I'd gag on canned peas, but love frozen.  It is possible that you have are allergic reaction to those.  Like when you eat them do they cause the roof of your mouth to itch?  Or do they feel "greasy" or "creamy" in your mouth?  Does it feel like your throat is closing up?  Those are signs of allergies, either to the food or a chemical like pesticides the food has been treated with, or maybe a preservative.  Good luck, I think I would die if I couldn't eat Romaine lettuce.

  7. I gag if someone put meat in my throat.

  8. I learned in Dental school that gagging is just a nervous reflex(the gag reflex) and it's all in the mind. I've actually interrupted alot of patients gagging just by talking to them and they become comfortable and forget.

  9. Probably because you don't like them.
