Question:

Why do I get cheek pain when wearing motorbike helmet?

I recently went out on the back of my husbands motorbike for the first time. The helmet I wore seemed to me to be a good fit and for the first 10 minutes was just fine, then I started to get terrible shooting pains in my cheeks and from then on if I moved my mouth or face at all I was in agony. Has anyone else experienced this? And why is it happening? I really would like to go out on the bike again but the pain is putting me off!

  1. get a bigger helmet

  2. You either need a bigger helmet or different cheek pads. It is a good idea to keep a helmet on for 20 - 30 minutes before deciding if it is a good fit since they usually feel fine at first. You can check with the manufacturer of the helmet or the store where you bought it to see if they offer thinner cheek pads. I know Scorpion does.

  3. may be you use heavy motorbike helmet, why don't you use comfortable lighter helmet

  4. There is usually heaps of cheek room in a moto helmet,

go a size up, if the helmets a small get a medium, if its medium get a large, mabey swap helmets with your husband and see if it helps, dont ride on the back again if you still have pain as it may distract you from the safety precuations of doubling

  5. Your helmet is too small.

  6. Yes I've experienced it. Go buy another helmet!

  7. wrar an open helmet light weight

  8. I agree with the answers about the helmet fit.  Definitely, check into getting a proper fitting helmet.  Was the helmet bought FOR YOU, or did it come with the bike (or husband)?  I have a helmet that came with my bike & matches beautifully; but I most always wear the one I bought because it's more comfortable.

I have another idea also; were you nervous?  I mean, were you so nervous that you were clenching your jaw & maybe that caused the pain without you realizing it?  If you were nervous like that I'd suggest only short rides for a while.

OOH, I just thought of another thing!  Did you have anything in your hair that may have been pressing on your scalp; sometimes the pain travels.  When I wear certain headbands they squeeze pressure points & cause pain in other areas; the pain stops immediately when I take off the headband.

I encourage you to conquer this small problem.  If you let it beat you then you'll be missing out on a lot of fun AND shared experiences with your hubby.
