Question:

Why do I get good download speed, but horrible browsing speed?

I have a LAN Internet connection, with a router in the room. I get very good (tested) download speeds but it takes about one minute to open up yahoo.com, for instance. This is ALMOST constant. For example it takes almost a minute to open up a Youtube page but when it does load, the clip is almost fully loaded. This happens on any browser, Firefox, IE, even Opera. My room-mate doesn't have this problem. I tried switching cables, IPs, everything (in the router). I even plugged the WAN cable straight into the LAN card (which, btw, is integrated on an ABIT motherboard). So I'm pretty sure it's something with my computer. But what?

  1. It could be your RAM. This happened to me with my lap top then I bought another gig of RAM and it runs alot faster. Hope this helps?

  2. If you're downloading at the same time as you're browsing, then there's your problem.

  3. I'll bet that your room-mate has configured a different DNS than you, and that the one you are using is horribly overloaded, or at a net address that has problems.

Failing that - try tracert from a command window and see if you can spot the problem
