Why do I have a problem with big crowds?

I'm not sure what it is, but I get uncomfortable with big crowds. I am kind of claustrophobic, so I think that could be part of the reason. For instance, let's say I'm at a bar or something, its so noisy, I just can't hear anyone. I have a drink in my hand and sometimes knock it into someone and have to get a new one and wait for 30 minutes for a new one. So why do I have this problem? Anyone else have a problem?

  1. There's a lot of people who don't like crowds; I'm one of them. I find myself a little intimidated when I'm in a large group of strangers. I went to my sister's wedding on the weekend, and I found myself getting anxious after about two hours. I have a bit of social anxiety and I really had to bite the bullet to avoid cutting and running.

Bars are a bad place for someone with this problem, the noise and crowd can get your brain overstimulated, and then the fear can start. Alcohol can actually make this problem worse for me.

I go to quieter bars with fewer people. That way I don't get overstimulated.

  2. I think everyone wants their own space. No one wants others bumping into them. You might have a mild case of claustrophobia, but I don't think you have a problem at all. I, myself don't enjoy being in large crowds.
