Why have I been given an appointment this week with Social Security when I am already receiving SSI. I am told now I am 62 and I have to file for benefits. I already have benefits and MediCal..I am told I can refuse Medicare or Medicaid because it is deducted from my check.

  1. SSI benefits is not the same as social security benefits. SSI is paid to people who are receiving a very low amount of social security disability in addition to the social security disability benefits.

Now, that you are 62, you have to file for traditional social security. That is not a bad thing and may provide you will additional income.

MediCal, Medicare and Medicaid are all government health insurance programs. You become eligible for Medicare when you begin receiving traditional social security. If you have MediCal now, it sounds like you will be able to get that and refuse medicare but keep the appointment and, if you can take a friend with you, so can be sure to understand any changes being made to your medical benefits.

I believe your benefits will be kept the same so don't worry!

  2. Because you're under 65 and are collecting.

You need to keep this appointment, if you want to keep collecting.
