Question:

Why do I have dark green spots on my lawn?

I will admit that I don't have the greenest lawn on the block but I'm working on it through many tips that I found on here. I couldn't find information regarding green spots. My lawn has many circle spots in 6 inches to 12 inches in diamater that are 10x greener than the rest of the lawn. Even more, it seems that the blades in those spots are longer than the rest of the lawn, hence growing faster. Why is this?

  1. One cause would be dogs and/or cats pottying at those spots.  That adds fertilizer at those locations and causes the grass to turn greener and grow faster.

  2. could be a different variety of grass growing in those areas than in others- if it is soft and healthy- not too easy to pull up- encourage it to grow- if it comes up easy-i.e pulls up like sod patches- get rid of it- it's a poor quality like crab grass- as someone else said- if you have pets they could have "fertilized" those areas- although from the size you indicated i doubt this is this case but could be- depends on the size and patterns of your pets "fertilizing" habits. try doing a yard wide pertilizer to even it out- avoiding the dark green spots- this in theory should even out the darker areas- or if it is too hot in your area to fertilize now- wait until fall- fertilize your entire yard and wait til spring to see if you have better results

  3. could it be like this one?... it's dallisgrass... you mow and two days later, this stuff looks like you missed mowing it!!...

  4. it sounds like crabgrass or a variant. Have you treated your lawn for weeds? weed and feed by Scotts is a great product and will fix it all up!

  5. You may want to check out John Perez's site about homemade recipes for fertilizers and insecticides.  It should explain and clarify it all up for you.

  6. there's three things that might be happening 1. you have a weed 2. the circles are place where the grass get a lot of water and 3. you might have spilled a little extra fertilizer in place that a re greener.

  7. the green is called grass

  8. Sounds like dog pee.  It has some ammonia in it = nitrogen = greener lawn where the urine puddle is.

  9. Its simple really, those are the healthiest spots and the rest of your lawn lacks Nitrogen, Phosphorous and Potassium.

Try fertilizing your lawn and maybe the rest of it will catch up.
